Nowa Huta is unlike anywhere else in Krakow. Built from 1949 as a socialist-realist model town around an enormous steelworks, it has wide avenues, monumental blocks and a planned symmetry that has nothing to do with the medieval city a few kilometres west. It has become genuinely interesting to visit and is increasingly on the tourist map.
What it is not is a late-night district. Nowa Huta has bars, but the concentration of venues that keeps the Old Town running until dawn simply does not exist out there. For the later part of an evening, most people head into the centre, which is a straightforward tram or taxi ride.
Getting Into the Centre
Trams connect Nowa Huta to the Old Town directly and run frequently, taking somewhere in the region of twenty to twenty-five minutes from Plac Centralny. Night trams cover part of the later period; a taxi is the reliable option after they stop.

A Complete Change of Register
Nowa Huta is open, planned and monumental. Our cellar is low, vaulted and medieval. Moving between the two in one evening is one of the more striking things you can do in this city, and it takes about half an hour.
There is no real overlap between the two experiences, which is what makes the combination work.
Worth Knowing
Plan the journey back before you commit to a late night, since Nowa Huta is far enough out that a taxi home is a real consideration rather than an afterthought.
